Moving into a new home is exciting! But transforming a house into your dream home is too expensive for most home buyers. In 2026, it could cost anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 to fully furnish the average home.
Don’t have so much money to spend behind you buy a house? Here’s the trick: Take inspiration from your dream furnishings, but find cheaper alternatives. If you need a little guidance, these six tips can help you get started.
1. Create a furniture budget
Buying home furnishings is emotional for most people. To avoid buying based on emotion or impulse, arm yourself with a budget before you start shopping.
The best way to furnish your home is to use the money you have already saved. However, if you have an emergency fund, don’t dip into it for furniture, as you may need to use the money for things like plumbing repairs or medical bills.
If you don’t have money saved up for home furnishings, you can start by asking friends and family if they can donate any old items and then save up for better items. Alternatively, you can carefully consider getting a loan from your credit union or bank. Just make sure the payments fit comfortably in yours bUDGET.
If you’re tempted to use credit cards, do the math first. How much will it cost you? pay off your credit card debt if you use it to buy a $4000 couch and seat set?
