Housing starts increased 19% in June
New private housing construction in June had a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.427 million, up 19% from May’s revised estimate of 1.199 million and 3.5% above the June 2025 rate of 1.379 million. The number of family apartments started in June was 895,000; that was 0.2% below the revised May figure of 897,000. The June rate for units in buildings with five or more units was 513,000.
Privately owned housing units approved for building permits in June were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.367 million. That’s 3.0% below the revised May rate of 1,410,000 and 2.3% below June 2025’s rate of 1,399 million. Single-family approvals in June totaled 871,000; that was 2.4% below May’s revised figure of 892,000. Unit permits in buildings with five or more units totaled 445,000 in June.
Privately owned housing completions in June were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.392 million. That’s 3.3% above the revised May estimate of 1.347 million and 1.5% above the June 2025 rate of 1.372 million. The number of completed family houses in June was 964,000; that’s 6.6% above May’s revised rate of 904,000. The June rate for units in buildings with five or more units was 413,000.
