Producer price index edged down 0.3% in June
The producer price index for final demand fell a seasonally adjusted 0.3% in June, according to a report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Final demand increased by 0.6% in May and by 1.1% in April. On an unadjusted basis, the final demand index rose 5.5% in the 12 months to June 2026.
The fall in prices in final demand in June can be attributed to a 1.4% drop in the index for goods in final demand. In contrast, prices of final demand services increased by 0.2%.
Prices for final demand excluding food, energy and trade services rose 0.1% in June, following a 0.8% jump in May. In the 12 months ending in June, prices for final demand excluding food, energy and trade services rose 5.1%.
The final goods index fell 1.4% in June, the biggest drop since a 1.9% decline in July 2022. Leading the broad decline in June was a 6.4% drop in final energy prices. The index of final demand goods excluding food and energy increased by 0.2%. In contrast, the final demand food index decreased by 0.6%.
The final demand services index rose 0.2% in June, after falling 0.1% in May. Over 60% of the overall increase in June can be traced to a 0.4% increase in margins for retail end-demand services. The index of final demand for transport and storage services fell by 0.1%. In contrast, the index for final demand services excluding trade, transport and storage rose by 0.1%.
